The Bereavement Counselling Service works with clients suffering chronic, inhibited or complicated grief or unexpected loss syndrome and associated problems. The service does not normally accept clients who are expected to follow a ‘normal’ if distressing – bereavement journey. These clients would be referred on to CRUSE or to local bereavement support groups.
Early bereavement reactions following traumatic deaths and those following disfiguring or long terminal illnesses are frequently accepted, especially when subsequent problems may be anticipated.
The BCS is not an acute service and is not suitable for those who have current or severe mental health needs and who require specialist mental health services.
